In early 2013 I spent 24 hours walking up and down West Grand Boulevard in Detroit. It was an astounding experience to see a place with such a powerful history, barely able to keep itself together. I spent the following weeks compiling information about the street. From there I picked Henry Ford Hospital, Hitsville U.S.A., and a branch of the Detroit Public Library system. Truly they function as the heart body and mind of Detroit. For each of these places, I created an icon that represented its personality. The title of the project was inspired by the Sufjan Stevens song “Detroit Lift Up Your Weary Head (Rebuild Restore Reconsider).”
